A currently vacant building on Spokane's lower South Hill that most recently housed a bar and grill is slated to be razed later this summer to make way for a parking lot addition for a nearby commercial building.

Both of the buildings are owned by Spokane-based United Health Services Credit Union, which is headquartered at the larger of the two, located at 613 S. Washington.

The structure to be demolished is at 619 S. Washington, which most recently was occupied by Buzio's 619 Bar & Grill, says Chuck Zeller, CEO of United Health Services Credit Union. That bar closed in 2009, he says.

The credit union bought the building in 2004 for $415,000, documents on file with the Spokane County Assessor's office show. Other assessor's records say the structure was built in 1929 and totals about 2,280 square feet of floor space.

"We purchased the property with the idea of tearing it down and using the space for additional parking for our members and tenants' customers," he says.

Zeller says the cost for the structure's demolition and related asbestos abatement totals about $11,700. He says he's not sure at this point how much it will cost to pave that space for a parking lot, or how many new parking spaces will be added to the current customer parking area, which is accessible off of Washington Street.

Spokane-based Ray's Demolition is tearing down the building, Zeller says.

Aside from the credit union, which is the 21,000-square-foot building's main occupant, other tenants are The Reclothery, a women's clothing consignment shop; a Washington state Department of Motor Vehicles licensing office; Partners with Families & Children Spokane, a nonprofit children's advocacy organization; SKILS'KIN Payee Services; and the law offices of Jason B. Couey, he says.
