The DoubleTree hotel downtown has completed a two-year, $4.6 million update topped with a name change that references its parent company.
Mike McLeod, the hotel's general manager, says the name change to Double Tree by Hilton Spokane City Center, which is reflected in new signage at the hotel, will increase consumer awareness of DoubleTree's relationship with its parent company, Hilton Worldwide.
"We've been part of Hilton since 1999 and finally made it part of our name," McLeod says of the 13-floor, 375-room riverside hotel at 322 N. Spokane Falls Court, next to the Spokane Convention Center.
Improvements leading to the new identity include new furniture in the guest rooms and new lighting, wall coverings, and artwork throughout the hotel, McLeod says. All rooms now have 37- to 42-inch high-definition LCD TVs, he adds.
DoubleTree also has renovated its wheelchair-accessible guest rooms and added six more such rooms to bring its inventory to 12 rooms that will meet upcoming federal Americans with Disabilities Act regulations.
Those upgrades include completely renovated bathrooms with roll-in showers, widened doorways and ADA-compliant furniture and fixtures, McLeod says.
Room improvements follow renovations to the hotel lobby and the Shutters Cafe breakfast restaurant, which also is on the lobby level, McLeod says.
The Bellevue, Wash., office of San Francisco-based Swinerton Builders of Washington Inc. was the contractor on the project, and Portland-based Innovative Designed Environments Associates Inc., designed it.
The hotel structure was constructed in 1974 and originally operated under the Sheraton name before changing affiliations to Red Lion in 1995 and later rebranding to a DoubleTree operation. It's also home to a Spencer's for Steaks & Chops restaurant.
