Community Health Association of Spokane, a nonprofit dental-, medical-care, and pharmacy services provider, recently began work at its Maple Street Clinic to prepare for an estimated $4 million renovation and addition to the facility.

Spokane-based Bouten Construction Co. last month demolished two small, stand-alone structures at the clinic's site, located at 3919 N. Maple, to make way for more parking lot space to accommodate a planned 5,900-square-foot addition.

CHAS's plans are to construct that addition onto the existing 21,600-square-foot facility, plans on file with the city of Spokane building services department show.

Kelly McDonald, a spokeswoman with CHAS, declines to comment on the project's specifications, but says the bulk of the construction won't begin until next spring.

The organization's website says the project is to include upgrading spaces for the clinic's medical and pharmacy services and renovating its patient parking area. The project is expected to be completed in the fall of 2013, the website says.

Bouten currently is completing $1 million worth of site-preparation work, which includes the construction of a $300,000 shell for the building's addition, documents on file with the city show. That addition is to be constructed on the west side of the clinic and near the northeast corner of Ash and Garland.

Two separate nearby structures—a 2,100-square-foot residential structure and a residential garage—have been demolished. There were located near the northwest corner of the CHAS clinic's 2-acre parcel, which is bordered by Maple and Ash streets to the east and west, and Walton and Garland avenues to the north and south.

Architectural plans for the Maple Street Clinic addition and the renovation of the existing facility are being reviewed by city building services department staff. The architect for the project is Spokane-based NAC|Architecture.

The Maple Street Clinic is one of seven clinics across the Inland Northwest that CHAS operates. It also has an urgent care center here.
