Spokane's Alexander Scott named to new post at Commerce Department

GU law school graduate will be federal funding adviser for state agency

July 1, 2021
Kevin Blocker

The Washington state Department of Commerce has hired Spokane-based Alexander Scott to the newly created position of federal adviser, the state agency announced late last month.

Scott, 31, joins Commerce having recently served as the Eastern Washington outreach director for U.S. Sen. Maria Cantwell, where he provided information on issues ranging from broadband wireless connectivity, economic development, education, health care, and tribal affairs.

Of his new position, Scott says, “There’s still an aspect that has yet to be determined as it’s a new job. But a large part of it will be helping the agency navigate and secure federal stimulus dollars as they will soon become available.”

Scott says he also will provide assistance to the commerce department in helping it shape its legislative policies at the federal level.

“There will be a focus on the federal side as they haven’t had the bandwidth to do it before,” he says.

Scott earned a bachelor’s degree in history from Walla Walla University and a juris doctorate degree from the Gonzaga University School of Law.

He also worked as a legal aide to former Spokane City Council President Ben Stuckart before going to work as Eastern Washington organizer for the Washington Democratic Party serving on local campaigns.

A native of Walla Walla, Scott also has served as a nonpartisan policy intern with the Washington state Senate Committee Services, he says.
