Mixed-use project eyed at old McKinley school building

Residential, restaurant, office space in works

January 14, 2021

A $4 million overhaul is planned for the former McKinley School, located at 120 N. Magnolia, in Spokane’s East Central neighborhood, according to predevelopment plans on file with the city of Spokane.

The plans call for the four-story structure to be renovated into a mix of office, residential, and restaurant space.

The ground floor will boast several amenities, including a beer hall, cocktail bar, pizza restaurant, bakery, coffee bar, and taco bar, preliminary plans show.

The residences will be a mix of studio and two-bedroom apartments, ranging in size from just under 300 square feet to over 980 square feet. The plans also include nearly 500 square feet of meeting space and roughly 3,500 square feet of common space spread over the first and second floors.

Scott Ballard Architecture, of Spokane, is listed on the predevelopment application as the project architect. No contractor is listed. Scott Ballard, owner of the architecture firm, didn’t respond immediately to requests for comment.

Plans show work is expected to begin before spring.

The McKinley School closed in 1962, according to the Spokane City-County Historic Preservation Office.

Last April, the property was sold to McKinley School LLC for $950,000. The company is governed by Steve DeWalt, development associate at Seattle-based InterUrban Development LLC, which also has offices in Spokane.

DeWalt couldn’t be reached immediately for comment.

InterUrban’s website lists the McKinley School, dubbed the Union Park Market by InterUrban, as one of the company’s current projects.

Another DeWalt-governed group, Patsy Clark LLC, purchased the historic Patsy Clark Mansion, in Browne’s Addition, in November. The Spokane offices of InterUrban Development now are located within that building.
