Knife River Corp. is planning a new 109,000-square-foot precast-concrete facility in Newman Lake, according to a Spokane County permit application. 

Preliminary site plans filed with the predevelopment application show the proposed new facility, to be located at 8025 N. Idaho Road, would host space for casting, kitting, precast maintenance, a metal and carpentry shop, as well as warehouse and office space. 

Knife River is a construction materials and contracting company with more than 5,600 employees in 15 states, according to the company’s website. 

Tony Spilde, a spokesman for Knife River, says the project is still in the preliminary phases and declines further comment. 

Houston-based Energy Architecture is listed on the plans as the project architect. The Spokane office of Coffman Engineers is providing engineering services. 

The single-story structure would include space for at least four conference rooms, eight offices, a reception area, training room, restrooms with showers, a mudroom, and a nearly 2,600-square-foot breakroom, site plans show. 

Neither an estimated project valuation or contractor is listed on the plans. 

Knife River Corp.’s parent company, MDU Resources Group Inc. of North Dakota, acquired the Spokane Valley operations of Oldcastle Infrastructure Inc. earlier this year. 

The former Oldcastle precast and prestressed concrete manufacturing facility, which occupies 80 acres at 922 N. Carnahan, has been operating as Knife River Prestressed since the acquisition. 

The project would be located on old Central Pre-Mix-owned property. Oldcastle purchased Central Pre-Mix Precast in 2012. 

Oldcastle’s former parent company, Dublin, Ireland-based CRH PLC, owns Central Pre-Mix Concrete Co. and Spokane Rock Products.
