Education: Bachelor’s degree in philosophy, Brighamton University; master’s and Ph.D. in economics, Colorado State University.

What drives you/inspires you? My children and my students at Whitworth University drive my eagerness to serve and make the world a better place.

Who has been a significant influence in your life and career? My grandfather in Puerto Rico. His knowledge was beyond that of a college-educated person because he was an avid reader. His work ethic was incredible and his faith in God was unwavering.

What advice would you have for others looking to follow a career path similar to yours? I would advise them to create a vision for their life. You persevere until you get there. You also surround yourself with positive people and lean into your faith for support and inspiration.

Ocasio Hochheimer spent much of her childhood in Puerto Rico, where she says her grandfather was a significant influence and instilled in her his belief that education is a way out of poverty.

After earning graduate degrees in economics and teaching for two years in Colorado, she fell in love with Spokane and Whitworth University during a visit here a dozen years ago. As a professor at Whitworth, Ocasio Hochheimer strives to equip students to be critical thinkers with tools to enhance what works and to challenge and fix what doesn’t.

In addition to her academic activities, she launched Grand Fir Analytics LLC, an independent research company, in 2020.

Ocasio Hochheimer serves as second vice chair of the Washington state Department of Commerce Community Economic Revitalization Board and vice chair of financial audit on the Spokane Symphony Orchestra/Fox Theater board. She’s also on the boards of Catholic Charities Eastern Washington and the Inland Northwest Land Conservancy.
