Community-Minded Enterprises to acquire its North Division facility

Property to allow nonprofit to expand staff, programs

Spokane-based Community-Minded Enterprises is purchasing the 8,300-square-foot facility it currently occupies at 2001 N. Division, in Spokane, where the nonprofit plans to expand its capacity to deliver integrated social services under one roof.

Daniel Sigler, chief financial officer at Community-Minded Enterprises, says the $1.75 million purchase of the building is expected to be completed Nov. 14.

Funding for the purchase is provided by a Washington state Department of Commerce Behavioral Health Capital Facilities grant with additional financing from STCU that will help pay for facility upgrades at the property.

Renovations are scheduled to begin mid-December and wrap up by the second quarter of 2025.

The envisioned tenant improvements at the one-story building will address site accessibility and change the layout of the lobby and some offices in a portion of the building. The roof and other equipment also will be updated, he says.

The nonprofit's administration team currently works at the North Division facility and Community-Minded Enterprises plans to occupy the entire building after the renovations. A dozen furnished offices that are currently vacant in the building will allow the organization to hire up to 12 additional employees to accommodate a growing demand for services.

Bernardo Wills, of Spokane, has worked with Community-Minded Enterprises on preliminary designs for the property, but the nonprofit hasn't selected contractor or an architect for the tenant improvements yet.

Sigler declines to estimate costs for the renovations.

"The building is in good shape already," Sigler says. "We just have to make a few changes ... for the services we'll be providing there."

Community-Minded Enterprises will expand its Behavioral Health and Recovery Support Services programs at the facility, he says.

The organization currently is working to determine the best way to organize the facility with related programs that are best suited and complementary to the behavioral services in that building.

"We'll phase in more services in the latter half of 2025 as we determine how we're going to move around some of the other pieces of what we do," Sigler says.

The nonprofit was founded in 1999 and offers resources and support to low-income, multiethnic, and marginalized communities with addiction recovery and employment programs. The organization also conducts outreach and advocacy through its digital media channel Community-Minded Television, known as CMTV14.

Additionally, Community-Minded Enterprises provides Early Learning, Family Services, and Recovery Support programs, in which much of the nonprofit's work focuses on young parents who are in recovery with housing and employment support and support for their children with early learning and other educational needs.

"This (location) will help us to have more continuity of care and support for families," says Sigler. "Purchasing this facility ... helps us be more sustainable in the long term for operating these programs."

The purchase marks a significant milestone for the 25-year-old organization, which has experienced workforce and program growth since 2022. The growth has helped establish the need for a dedicated facility among the nonprofit's community health partners and other stakeholders, says Sigler, adding that the nonprofit's workforce has increased 43% and programs have grown by 57% in the last two years.

"Up until now, leasing facilities has met our needs," Sigler says. "In the last few years, we've had pretty significant growth in our program footprint in Spokane, ... Tri-Cities, and in Pend Oreille County and Newport."

Community-Minded Enterprises will continue its operations at five other sites in Eastern Washington through lease agreements, he says. In addition to the North Division facility, the nonprofit operates a recovery center, at 622 E. Second, in Spokane; two Early Childhood Education and Assistance Programs, at 3307 E. 55th, on Spokane's South Hill, and at 214 N. Cedar, in Spokane's Peaceful Valley neighborhood; an office in Pasco, Washington; and a Recovery Cafe in Newport, Washington.
