Hotel considered at old Red Lion BBQ building

Owner weighing other housing options above restaurant

Formerly home to the Red Lion Pub, the building at 2 E. Main is now occupied by the Pure Northwest restaurant on the ground floor.

A 22-room hotel is among the options being considered at 2 E. Main, the three-story downtown Spokane building that currently houses the Pure Northwest restaurant and previously was home to Red Lion Pub.

A predevelopment conference application and site plan on file with the city of Spokane shows plans for a $2 million remodel project that would include 22 guest rooms—two on the first floor where the Pure Northwest restaurant and cocktail lounge is located, and ten each on the second and third floors, which previously had apartment units.

In a likely ode to the building’s address, the project’s title is Two Main Suites.

Spokane restaurateur Jeremy Tangen purchased the roughly 115-year-old building in August for about $1.6 million through Whynorthwest LLC, Spokane County records show.

Tangen is the owner of Tangen Hospitality Inc., a bar and restaurant group that includes Fast Eddie’s All Purpose Pub, Globe Bar & Kitchen, and Borracho Tacos & Tequileria, all three of which are located within the same two-block stretch along Division Street as the old Red Lion building.

In an email to the Journal, Tangen says no plans have been cemented for the property.

The second and third floors have been cleaned out, and he is meeting with the city to get feedback on the options and requirements for possible development.

“We are exploring multiple housing options, or based on the market, waiting and finding a tenant and doing a build-to-suit if nothing else pencils at this time,” Tangen says.

Red Lion Pub, which also had done business as Red Lion Barbeque, closed in December 2023 after more than 60 years in business.

The painted-on Red Lion billboard on the building’s south side has greeted northbound Division Street traffic for years.

Pure Northwest opened in the former Red Lion space in June 2024, the Journal previously reported.
