Fourth-generation entrepreneur Steve Egger is adding a restaurant and whiskey bar to the list of the family businesses on Spokane's South Hill, to be called Local Flavors.

“We wanted to bring something new to the family and property up here,” Egger says.

The restaurant, located at 5611 S. Perry, is situated in the same building as Egger's Specialty Market, which Egger also owns. The spot was previously used as storage and occupies half of the 3,000-square-foot building.

Egger's Better Meats and Seafood, owned by Egger’s dad, Steve Egger, and his uncle, Jeff Egger, also sits on the property, behind the market and restaurant, at 5609 S. Perry, and was built in 2006 to replace the older structure at 5611 S. Perry.

Co-owners Egger and Armand Van Pelt plan to open the doors to Local Flavors on May 3 with a Kentucky Derby-inspired party, including curated bourbon flights, derby-style small bites, and fresh mint juleps.

The restaurant will employ 10 people to start and seat up to 40 guests.

“We just wanted to create something that we were excited to share with customers,” Egger says.

Egger says he will combine his extreme passion for whiskey and spirits with Van Pelt’s passion for food and cuisine.

“I specialize in whiskey education and whiskey knowledge and that’s what we want to bring to the table,” says Egger. “We want to share a love for the two things we care about.”

To start, the restaurant will serve hand-held sandwiches, salads, and standard pub snacks, including a couple charcuterie boards, a blend of curated meats and cheeses.

A large assortment of drinks will include cocktails, whiskey and bourbon flights, and local wine and beer from Barrister Winery and Lumberbeard Brewery.

Signature sandwiches will include grilled cheese, pastrami, and a house-made corned beef Reuben. Select vegan items, pretzel bites, Caesar salad, and smoked chicken quesadillas will also be on the menu.

A kid’s menu will include multiple items below $10, including quesadillas, sweet potato fries, and a grilled cheese sandwich.

Egger says he hopes to bring breakfast items, including sandwiches and coffee, to the menu soon.

Local Flavors will host multiple whiskey events, including an event during the Kentucky Derby.

“Bourbon and whiskey and the Kentucky Derby have a very big history together,” Egger says. “I really want to bring the cool, fun history facts, not just how it is made.”

The restaurant also will have a wine club, whiskey club, and cocktail club, and will host distillers and winemakers discussing products.

Local Flavors will be open noon to 10 p.m., Monday through Saturday.

According to the Egger's website, there are a total of four Egger meat markets, all owned separately by members of the Egger family. The others are including Egger’s Meats North, at 902 W. Rosewood; Egger Meats in the Spokane Valley, at 10629 E. Sprague; and Bill’s Meats in Deer Park, at 101 W. H.
