The Journal of Business has announced changes to its newsroom’s leadership. Erica Bullock has been promoted to editor, and Dylan Harris has been promoted to deputy editor.

“I am very pleased to have Erica lead our newsroom into the future, and I am also thrilled to have Dylan right by her side as deputy editor,” says Paul Read, publisher of the Journal. “Together, they have shown the kind of commitment to our readers and the business community that gives me confidence that the Journal — now completing its 40th year — will be around to serve the Inland Northwest for another 40 years.”

The change in leadership follows the recent departure of Linn Parish, who served as editor of the Journal for eight years. Parish now works at Eastern Washington University as director of communications and media relations.

The transition also follows the retirement earlier this year of Mike McLean, who had worked at the Journal since 2005, most recently as deputy editor.

Prior to their promotions, Bullock and Harris worked as interim co-deputy editors. Before that, Bullock was the Journal's sections editor and Harris was the digital editor.

“Following Linn’s departure, Erica and Dylan stepped up to lead a talented team in his absence and have earned the respect both inside and outside of the newspaper,” Read says. “During that time, Erica emerged as our next leader, and Dylan’s skillsets and commitment to our readers made the duo the exact right team to take us forward.”

Bullock is the fifth editor and first woman in the role in the history of the Journal.

“Expect big things in the future," Read says. "I am proud of them and the entire news team.”

Both graduates of EWU, Bullock has been with the Journal since 2019, and Harris joined the newsroom in 2021.

The Journal of Business is an independent business newspaper that covers the metropolitan area that includes Spokane and Coeur d’Alene. The Journal has been in print since 1986, and is a subsidiary of Spokane-based Cowles Co. The Journal’s sister publication — the Tri-Cities Area Journal of Business — is located in Kennewick, Washington.
