Comcast Corp. says it has spent $2 million over the past nine months upgrading the fiber optic network and its infrastructure of Deer Park.

Comcast Cable, part of Philadelphia-based cable giant Comcast Corp., acquired Northstar Broadband LLC in early March of this year, Comcast spokesman Nick McDonald says. Comcast began upgrades shortly after acquiring Northstar, he says.

“That included making sure fiber lines are up to date, checking connections to homes, and making sure we can bring in top Comcast resources as best as we can,” he says.

Customers will have access to services not provided by Northstar, he says.

“The previous Northstar system only supported cable TV subscriptions, offered modern internet service to a limited number of customers, and did not offer commercially marketed cable internet services,” McDonald says. “This nine-month upgrade brings a new, full suite of residential and commercial services to an underserved part of Spokane County.”

He says that Comcast now serves about 2,200 residents in the Deer Park area.

In a press release announcing the upgrades, Comcast says it has invested more than $63 million in the Greater Spokane Metro Area, and has more than 530 full-time employees here.

“There is a lot of excitement among residents and in the business community around the new offerings from Comcast,” Tim Verzal, mayor of Deer Park, says in the release. “We are pleased by the company’s investment in Deer Park and work to upgrade its network.”

Deer Park residents and businesses now will have access to faster internet speeds of up to 1 gigabit, according to the release.

Comcast claims it has invested more than $2.2 billion in technology and infrastructure in Washington since 2011. 

A Comcast customer call center that employs several hundred people has been located in Liberty Lake since 2015.
