Longtime produce seller to open store in Hillyard

Market to feature goods from Inland Northwest

June 8, 2017
Mike McLean

Jack and Mary Green, of Spokane, have bought a 3,500-square-foot, single-story retail building at 4915 N. Market, in the Hillyard community, where they plan to open Green’s Fresh Market this month.

The store initially will be a produce market, selling locally sourced vegetables and fruits when in season, says Jack Green.

“As the business grows, we plan on putting in a fresh deli,” Green says, adding, “We’d like eventually to do fresh meat and whatever the market demands beyond that.”

He says he’ll run the store by himself at first, but hopes to build the staff up to five employees.

Green says he has about 40 years of experience in produce, beginning with a produce-delivery business he and his brother started after high school.

He also has operated produce markets in Spokane, including Champion Produce in the early 1980s and later Green’s Quality Produce, which was renamed Piccolo’s Market.

Green says he sold Piccolo’s to Cassano’s Grocery LLC, another specialty grocer, in 2009 and continued to work there until last year.

The Green’s Fresh Market store site is in the former site of Hillyard Gardens & Bistro, which opened in 2015. Before that, it was the longtime location of Hillyard Florist.

“The business end is its own little town. Everyone knows everyone and supports everyone,” he says. “Hillyard is on the verge of revitalization. I feel it’s something up and coming.”

Commercial real estate broker Jim Orcutt, of Spokane-based NAI Black, was the listing agent for the transaction.
