The fire-damaged, 30,000-square-foot former S&P Meats warehouse in East Spokane is being demolished.

Dave Quass, superintendent with the Spokane Valley office of Seattle-based contractor M.J. Takisaki Inc., says the city condemned the two-story building at 801 N. Regal after a fire seriously damaged the structure in late September 2021.

Due to a lack of response from the property owners, the city took over the property earlier this year and hired M.J. Takisaki to demolish the building.

The demolition project will be completed by the end of this month, Quass says. A city of Spokane representative didn’t respond immediately to a request for comment on future plans for the property.

S&P Meats originally was named S&P Foods Inc., a Spokane-based meat producer that was founded in 1952. The company’s products included sausage and deli meats, which were sold wholesale to food service companies in 10 states.

The company was a product of a merger in 2000 between S&P Foods and competitor Hathaway Meats Inc., which had operations in Spokane and Coeur d’Alene. As reported by the Puget Sound Business Journal, S&P Meats became a subsidiary of Services Group of America in 2002. The company was rebranded as Ameristar Meats in 2006 and was acquired by US Foods Inc. in 2019.

The S&P warehouse, which is on a 1-acre lot, originally was built in 1938, according to Spokane County Assessor’s records. The property most recently was sold in 2015 to Tacoma, Washington-based Regal District LLC for $259,900.
