Saad's shop to move its North Side outlet

Saad Brothers Inc., doing business as Saad's Shoe Repair, is moving July 1 to retail space along Division Street from nearby NorthTown Mall, where it has been a tenant since the shopping center opened in 1954.

Owner Larry Alfano says the company has agreed to lease nearly 1,200 square feet of retail space at 4407 N. Division, next to Rizzuto's Wide Shoes.

"It's just a block and a half south from where we are now, so it's a very easy find," Alfano says.

Saad Brothers has three employees including Alfano. In addition to shoes, the company repairs boots, purses, and coats.

Staffield Family LLC is the lessor. Colin Conway and Lou Neeser, both of Kiemle & Hagood Co., negotiated the lease.

Alfano says a planned remodel on the north end of NorthTown Mall prompted the move out of a 1,300-square-foot external, street-level bay near Macy's that Saad's has occupied for about seven years. Saad's shop at NorthTown previously was inside the mall.

He says NorthTown's management gave him ample notice and has worked with him to relocate.

In November, Saad's closed its longtime downtown store, at 213 N. Wall, after two employees died within six months of each other last year, and Alfano says he needed to consolidate to the one outlet.

Hard cider producer opens on Green Bluff

A hard cider maker operating as Twilight Cider Works has opened a tasting room on Green Bluff, says owner Will Jordan, who is the company's only employee.

The company is located in a 1,600-square-foot space in a 20,000-square-foot former apple storage building at 18102 N. Day Mount Spokane Road, Jordan says. The tasting room, which opened earlier this month, is located in about 400 square feet of floor space, with the rest of the space dedicated to cider production and storage, he says.

"I started making hard ciders a couple years ago and decided to get into the commercial end of it," Jordan says.

The company makes its hard cider on-site out of apples harvested from Green Bluff farms and some fruit from a farm just outside of Leavenworth, Wash., he says. He pressed about 14,000 pounds of apples last November for its first commercial batch.

The cider is packaged in 500-milliliter and 750-milliliter bottles.

Jordan offers three hard ciders, including one with a mild cherry flavor. The tasting room will be open year-round on weekends and weekday afternoons, he says.

In addition to running Twilight Cider Works, Jordan works at Deaconess Hospital as a sleep technologist.

GVD plans wine barat Crosby theater

An affiliate of Spokane-based GVD Commercial Properties Inc., which owns the Bing Crosby Theater downtown, plans to open a premium concession area, to be named Ovations, next month on the third floor of the theater at 901 W. Sprague, says Kaliene Roth, a GVD spokeswoman.

Ovations, which will specialize in serving wines and light foods, will be "almost a satellite" operation of the Sapphire Lounge, another GVD holding, Roth says.

"It's going to be a wine lounge inside the Bing Crosby Theater," she says.

Ovations will occupy 2,000 square feet of floor space, including a bar, seating area, and kitchen. It will have a seating capacity of 48, she says, and will have three or four employees.

Ovations will be open during events and showings at the 750-seat Bing Crosby Theater, and also will be available for rent as a small gathering place or meeting space for corporate groups, Roth says.

GVD bought the four-story, 98-year-old theater building last year for $914,000, Spokane County Assessor's records show. In 2010, GVD acquired the former Rodeway Inn, at 901 W. First, a block south of the theater, and redeveloped it as the Hotel Ruby & Sapphire Lounge, a boutique hotel and craft cocktail lounge.

Cinema operator buys Hayden movie theater

Mike Lehosit, who operates a movie theater in Boise where he lives, has bought the assets of the former Hayden Cinema 6, in Hayden, Idaho, and has opened Hayden Discount Cinema there.

The six-screen movie theater, located at 300 W. Centa, in the Prairie Shopping Center in Hayden, offers $2 movies and has concession items available for $3 or less, Lehosit says.

The theater employs about 15 workers, mostly part time, he says.

Hayden Discount Cinema is leasing the 22,000-square-foot theater space, with 1,200 seats total, from Parkwood Business Properties, of Coeur d'Alene.

Lehosit, who is an eighth grade math teacher, also owns Overland Park Cinema in Boise, which he has operated for about 10 years.

He says he hopes to upgrade the Hayden theater and convert it to digital projectors in the near future, a step he says depends on business volume at the site.

NBC Camps unveils program in Thailand

NBC Camps Inc., a Spokane company that runs sports camps worldwide, is now offering basketball camps in Bangkok, Thailand, says vice president Jennifer Ferch.

The second week-long camp begins June 23 and is held at the American School of Bangkok. The first camp started June 17.

Ferch says the Thailand camp came about when a player from Bangkok flew to Portland last year for an NBC Camp program, and later connected the company to the American School of Bangkok in Thailand.

"We were invited to come over and run camps there for two weeks," Ferch says.

She projects enrollment will be between 30 and 50 campers per week.

In addition to the camps in Thailand, Ferch says NBC Camps also added a week-long basketball program at Southeast University, in Lakeland, Fla., and a basketball day camp at Skagit Valley College, in Mount Vernon, Wash.

Depending on location and the length of the program, enrollment is between 30 and 300 children per site, Ferch says.

NBC Camps runs day- and week-long sports camps in more than 50 U.S. cities and six countries. It currently offers seven basketball and volleyball camps in Spokane and Coeur d'Alene.

Chiropractic clinic planned on South Hill

Rachae Bell and West Side business partner Darren White plan to open Clear Chiropractic this month on Spokane's South Hill, Bell says.

The pair, both of whom are chiropractors, has leased a 1,900-square-foot space for the new practice in an 11,000-square-foot building at 2503 E. 27th that Physical Therapy Associates PS mostly occupies is located just north of a Safeway store, she says.

The clinic will employ one full-time office manager and one full-time massage therapist, in addition to Bell. It will specialize in upper cervical spine care, Bell says.

Future plans for the clinic include employing two additional full-time chiropractors, three more massage therapists, and possibly opening a satellite clinic on the North Side, she says.

Bell received her Doctor of Chiropractic from Life Chiropractic College West, in Hayward Calif., in 2011.

White, who is located in Kirkland, Wash., has been in practice for 12 years. He owns two practices in the Seattle area, in addition to co-owning the Spokane location, Bell says.
