Planned Parenthood moves Spokane Valley clinic to new building

Reproductive-health center more than doubles its space with structure near library

June 20, 2013
Jessica Valencia

Planned Parenthood of Greater Washington and North Idaho has moved its Spokane Valley clinic to a new structure it has built, says public affairs manager Jen Ham.

The nonprofit reproductive-health center operator is now seeing patients in the new 4,200-square-foot building at 12104 E. Main, just east of the Spokane County Library District's Spokane Valley branch. Planned Parenthood relocated from a 1,800-square-foot medical office at 10525 E. Trent, Ham says. She estimates total construction costs for the project at around $1 million.

"We wanted a stand-alone location that was closer to some of the public transportation routes," Ham says.

Planned Parenthood of Greater Washington and North Idaho is a chapter of the parent Planned Parenthood organization, which is based in New York. Ham declines to disclose the number of employees at the Valley clinic, but says the organization employs more than 150 people at all of its clinics in the region.

In 2011, Meridian Construction Inc., of Spokane, demolished a house and a 2,600-square-foot medical office that was in disrepair to make room for the new building. Construction of the new clinic started last year, she says.

Christopher Morlan Architect PLLC of Spokane designed the building, she says, and Meridian was the contractor for the project.

Planned Parenthood of Greater Washington and North Idaho has been in operation since 1967, and the organization currently operates nine clinics in Washington state east of the Cascade Mountains. In the Spokane area, in addition to the Valley facility, Planned Parenthood also operates a health center at 123 E. Indiana, on Spokane's North Side.

The chapter's main office is located in Yakima.

In 2011, the latest data available, the organization saw more than 35,000 patients across all its health centers in the region.
