New hardware store planned in Airway Heights

Kalispel Tribe envisions Builders Supply as first step in larger retail development

November 23, 2021

The Kalispel Tribe of Indians has partnered with Builders Supply Inc. to bring a planned new hardware, construction supply, and farm-and-ranch retail store to Airway Heights.

Construction on the 70,000-square-foot facility is expected to begin soon, with the store opening scheduled for late 2022, says Brandon Haugen, director of real estate for the Kalispel Development, an arm of the Kalispel Tribal Economic Authority.

The store project site, which is owned by the tribe, is north of the Kalispel Market and Chevron fuel station at the northwest corner of U.S. 2 and Hayford Road.

The retailer, which does business as Builders Supply & Home Center, also has stores in Colville, and Kettle Falls, Washington.

Haugen says he expects the new store to be the cornerstone to the tribe’s envisioned commercial retail shopping area, which will encompass more than 40 acres of land about a half-mile south of its Northern Quest Resort & Casino.

“We envision more than 200,000 square feet of retail development in that area in coming years,” Haugen says.

Plans for the new 8.5-acre Builders Supply store include a drive-thru lumber yard.

Kalispel Tribal Chairman Glen Nenema says in a press release, “As one of the fastest-growing areas in the state, having a large hardware and building supply presence nearby will be tremendously helpful for the surrounding community.”

Haugen says Aman Sood, who has leased the store site from the tribe, will construct and operate the new store.

Russ Wolfe, of Wolfe Architectural Group PS, of Spokane, is designing the project, and the Spokane office of Parametrix Inc. is providing civil engineering services.

Shaun Meads, of Anzac Properties, of Spokane, handled the real estate lease.
