New York-based retail chain Macy’s Inc. plans to close 66 underperforming department stores this year, including its Coeur d’Alene store, in the Silver Lake Mall.
Three stores in Western Washington also are on the closure list, but the Macy’s in the Spokane Valley Mall, at 14740 E. Indiana, has survived the cut, although the retailer indicates further closures are likely.
The Coeur d’Alene store is located at 200 W. Hanley. A representative of the store couldn’t be reached immediately for comment.
The company’s list of store locations to be shuttered says most of the closures will occur in the first quarter of this year.
Macy's is marketing the closures as part of its “bold new chapter” strategy originally announced nearly a year ago in which the company plans to close 150 stores over a three-year period while investing in about 350 best-performing stores.
“We are closing underproductive Macy’s stores to allow us to focus our resources and prioritize investments in our go–forward stores,” Tony Spring, Macy’s chairman and CEO, says in a statement posted on the company’s website.
If the Coeur d'Alene store closes as planned, the Spokane Valley store will be the only Macy’s in a 140-mile radius of Spokane, with the nearest other Macy’s in Kennewick, Washington. Macy’s closed its historic downtown Spokane store in 2016.
