A new Planet Fitness club is being planned in the former Shopko building in North Spokane, at 9534 N. Newport Highway, a permit application on file with the city shows.
The proposed gym will take over about 25,000 square feet of vacant space next to HomeGoods at the southern end of the former Shopko, which closed in 2019.
Planet Fitness, a New Hampshire-based fitness club franchise with over 2,700 locations worldwide, has three other gyms in the area: at 1617 W. Northwest Blvd., in Spokane; 13112 E. Sprague, in Spokane Valley; and at 200 W. Hanley, in Coeur d’Alene.
The Newport Highway gym is being planned by franchisee Fit SpokNorth LLC. A representative of the franchisee couldn’t immediately be reached for comment.
The remodel project has an estimated cost of about $1.2 million, records show.
The change of use permit application lists Moscow, Idaho-based DKMullin Architects as the project architect and Nevada-based Saarem Engineering as the project engineer. A contractor isn’t listed on the application.
Site plans call for about 19,000 square feet of workout area, with the remaining space used for locker rooms, tanning and massage areas, and storage areas.
