Construction of a 17,500-square-foot 13-unit T-style airplane hangar has been proposed at Felts Field Airport, according to a predevelopment conference application on file with the city of Spokane.
The project is estimated to cost about $2.1 million dollars, according to application information that was filed in October.
Spokane-based hangar rental company KSFF Hangar 49 LLC will manage the new hangar. Spokane-based Parkwater Hangars LLC is the business entity providing funding for the project, says Tim Lewis, co-owner of KSFF Hangar 49 and a flight instructor at Northwest Flight Service, which operates at Felts Field.
Northwest Flight Service is not associated with the project.
The new hanger is proposed at 6311 E. Rutter, along the southern border of Felts Field and north of Northwest Flight Service, Lewis says.
“It’s a premium location,” he says. “It’s near fuel, near the restaurant. It’s a cool location.”
The hangar project was first proposed in 2022, according to previously filed permit information.
The structure will be built from a prefabricated kit supplied by Benton Harbor, Michigan-based Higher Power Hydraulic Doors LLC, Lewis says.
The hangar’s nested T-style design means aircraft face outward from airplane-shaped units that alternatively face north and south, he explains.
Miami-based Ardurra Group Inc. is the engineering firm on the project, says Lewis. A general contractor has been selected but Lewis declines to name the company. Due to the hangar's construction by a prefabricated kit, the project will not have an architect.
The Federal Aviation Administration has given the project line of sight approval. Lewis says a predevelopment meeting will take place Thursday, Nov. 6, but he doesn’t expect construction to begin soon.
“We have to wait for engineer drawings to arrive, and permitting takes time,” he says. “It’s unlikely we do anything before next spring.”
