Goodwill Industries of the Inland Northwest is expanding its North Idaho footprint with the acquisition of the former Sunshine Minting building, in Coeur d'Alene, where the organization is planning to transform the 36,000-square-foot minting facility, located at 750 W. Canfield, into a multifunctional property.

The property will be Goodwill's second facility in Coeur d'Alene and its sixth overall in North Idaho. The building will house Goodwill's Workforce & Family Services division, retail operations, a donation center, administrative offices, and e-commerce functions, according to a press release from the organization.

As planned, Goodwill's Workforce & Family Services and business offices are expected to occupy 6,000 square feet of the building; a retail store and a supporting production area will occupy 13,650 square feet; the donation service center will have 400 square feet of space; and Goodwill's e-commerce department will occupy 6,000 square feet.

The new facility is expected to create 60 new jobs upon completion, says Clark Brekke, president and CEO of the Spokane-based nonprofit, who adds that the revamped facility is expected to open in May 2027. Once operational, the facility's 60-person workforce will bring Goodwill's total Coeur d'Alene workforce to 100 employees.

Spokane-based LL Studio Architect PLLC is the architect for the project and Baker Construction and Development Inc., also of Spokane, is the contractor, Brekke says.

He declines to disclose the purchase price but says the nonprofit received a good deal on the transaction.

“Goodwill negotiated a purchase price significantly less than the asking price of $7.2 million," Brekke says. “As we’re currently in the design stages of the owner improvements, we do not yet have final cost estimates for the renovations.”

Revenue generated through Goodwill's retail and e-commerce operations helps fund workforce development programs, job training services, employment placement assistance, and family support programs throughout Eastern Washington and North Idaho, Brekke says.

"We look forward to expanding our service footprint in North Idaho," he says. "We are eternally grateful for the support we receive from local donors and shoppers who partner with us to provide a hand up to people in the community."

In North Idaho, Goodwill currently operates facilities in Coeur d'Alene, at 1212 N. Fourth; in Post Falls, at 4040 E. 16th; and in the cities of Ponderay, Moscow, and Lewiston.
