Spokane-based Rockwood Retirement Communities is actively engaged in planning a new senior living campus within the River District development in Liberty Lake. About 200 independent living residences, 36 assisted living apartments, and 24 memory care residential units are proposed.
Exceeding a $275 million estimated development cost, Rockwood Retirement's proposed Liberty Lake campus is planned to take shape on 15 acres of land north of Wellington Parkway and east of Harvard Road, near Trutina, the 55-and-older retirement community developed by Liberty Lake-based Greenstone Corp.
Rockwood, a tradename for Spokane United Methodist Homes, is currently completing due diligence, business planning, and preliminary design activities. As planned, construction is expected to begin in 2028, with occupancy planned in 2030.
Rockwood Retirement Communities is working with Irving, Texas-based Greystone Communities Inc., a senior living consulting firm, providing strategic advisory and development consulting services for the project.
Once operational, the Liberty Lake campus is expected to create more than 100 full-time jobs.
“Liberty Lake is an exciting opportunity for Rockwood to build on more than six decades of serving seniors in the Inland Northwest,” says Rockwood Retirement President and CEO Jim Maxwell. “We see an opportunity to create a community that reflects what people value about Rockwood — exceptional service, a strong sense of community, and an environment that supports wellness and independence."Greenstone founder Jim Frank says he was approached by Rockwood Retirement Communities regarding the partnership. While selling land is not a typical part of doing business for Frank, he says a new Rockwood campus located adjacent to Trutina would complement the community and would help keep family members close by without having to move across town.
So far at Trutina, Greenstone has built 380 single-family homes, has another 60 potential single-family homes planned over the next three years, as well as 100 multifamily residences. The property will also have 60 additional multifamily residences, he says.
The proposed Liberty Lake retirement community would become Rockwood Retirement’s third Spokane County campus, joining Rockwood South Hill, at 2903 E. 25th, and Rockwood at Whitworth, located at 10322 N. Middleton Drive. The organization also operates Appleway Court, an affordable senior living community at 223 S. Farr Road in Spokane Valley.
