A new aircraft fueling facility will be constructed at Felts Field this summer, and the current fueling system will be demolished, says Todd Woodard, spokesman for Spokane Airports.

Woodard says the project, which has an estimated cost of between $1.5 and $2 million, is scheduled to go out for bids later this month.

“The existing underground fuel facility tanks are old and require replacement,” says Woodard. “The new tanks will be installed above ground and also will be larger in size to accommodate increased fuel loads.”

Woodard says the current fuel facility at Felts Field, on the eastern edge of Spokane, consists of two 10,000-gallon fuel storage tanks. He says the planned project will remove the underground tanks and replace them with a 15,000-gallon tank and a 12,000-gallon tank.

“The new facility will also include all new underground piping, electronic credit card readers, LED lighting, a concrete apron, and secondary containment,” he says.

Woodard says the new facility will be constructed just to the north of the existing fuel facility, which is located near the Northwest Flight School building at 6095 E. Rutter. 

“This will create additional aircraft parking on the existing apron where the current fuel facility is located,” he says. “It will also isolate the fuel facility and create additional space for aircraft to maneuver around the new fuel island.”

Woodard says construction is expected to begin in July and to be completed by October.

He says the project will create only minimal impact to airfield operations, as construction of the new facility will be completed and commissioned prior to the demolition of the existing fueling site.

Felts Field consists of 400 acres of land. Felts Field, Spokane International Airport, and the Airport Business Park are owned jointly by Spokane County and the city of Spokane, and are operated by the Spokane Airport Board, which consists of seven members appointed by the two governmental
jurisdictions.
