Tandy Leather relocates to retail space on Monroe

Former location on Boone might become home to children's furniture store

The Spokane outlet of Tandy Leather Factory Inc., a Fort Worth, Texas-based retailer that sells leather and leatherworking supplies, has moved to a new location at 1702 N. Monroe.

Tandy Leather store manager Cheryl Utley says the outlet had operated for 20 years out of 6,000 square feet of space at 28 W. Boone.

In 2009, that building was bought by San Diego, Calif.-based Mor Furniture for Less Inc., which purchased it along with its Spokane store building at 1201 N. Division, just east across the parking lot from the former Tandy Leather Factory site.

Utley says Tandy Leather Factory moved because its lease terms with Mor Furniture ended in May, and Mor Furniture now plans to use the property behind its store.

Mor Furniture for Less Chairman Rick Haux Sr. told the Journal of Business in January 2009 that the company had bought the north Division Street property in which its store is located and the nearby separate building leased by Tandy Leather Factory for a total of $1.8 million.

At that time, he also said that Mor Furniture for Less would continue leasing space to the leather store, but that Mor Furniture planned to use it eventually for its Mor youth furniture line.

Haux now says the company mostly likely will go forward with plans to develop a Mor Kids & Teens Furniture for Less at the former Tandy Leather Factory site, but the company hasn't made a final decision yet. The building would require some improvements, he adds.

"We'll make the decision within 60 to 90 days," he says.

At Tandy Leather's new Monroe Street location, Construction Associates of Spokane Inc. made about $100,000 in improvements to the building after a Napa Auto Parts store moved out of that building in early May, says Kevin Edwards, of NAI Black, who handle the Tandy Leather lease with Pete Thompson, of Stonemark Real Estate Co. Monroe Street Investments LLC, of Spokane, owns the building.

Tenant improvements included removing an interior wall for a new showroom, installing some new lighting, and repainting the building, which has about 4,000 square feet on a main level and a 2,000-square-foot basement.

Tandy Leather Factory sells leather and leatherworking supplies to hobbyists, businesses, professional leather workers, manufacturers, institutions, and youth groups.

The business also holds in-store classes and workshops. In Spokane, the Tandy Leather store has four employees, including three full time and one part time.
