Big Lots to close North Spokane store

Nearly 300 others on chopping block nationwide

August 2, 2024
Journal of Business Staff

Big Lots Inc. plans to close its North Spokane store as one of nearly 300 planned closures nationwide amid the Columbus, Ohio-based discount retail chain’s financial woes.

The store in the Northpointe Plaza, at 9612 N. Newport Highway, has posted “closing this location” on its website and is marking 20% discounts on most items.

Among the 293 stores on the chopping block, Big Lots plans to close more than a dozen stores in Washington, including its Richland store, the Tri-Cities Area Journal of Business reports.

The Big Lots stores in Spokane Valley, at 14024 E. Sprague, and in Coeur d'Alene, at 101 E. Best, aren't on the closure list.

Big Lots reported a net loss of $205 million in the first quarter of fiscal year 2024. Net sales during the quarter totaled $1 billion, a 10.2% decrease compared with the year-earlier period.

Bruce Thorn, president and CEO of Big Lots, blamed a pullback in consumer spending by core customers, particularly on high-ticket discretionary items.

Big Lots currently has 1,390 stores in 48 states, including those it plans to close.
