Maverik builds its fifth store in Spokane area

C-store, fueling outlet under construction at Ruby, Montgomery

Construction of a $2.9 million Maverik Inc. gas station and convenience store is underway at 28 E. Montgomery, in Spokane.

Located on 1.6 acres of land, the new gas station will have 12 fueling stations, all of which will offer both unleaded and diesel gasoline pumps, says Elizabeth Sorenson, Salt Lake City-based permits manager for Maverik. Sorenson says Maverik could add two more pumps at the location in the future, for a total of 14 pumps.

The single-story convenience store will be just under 4,400 square feet, and the fuel canopy will cover 8,400 square feet of space. The fuel will be stored in two, 25,000-gallon underground storage tanks.

Work on underground utilities is underway, Sorenson says, and construction is expected to be completed by July 1.

The site is on the southeast corner of Ruby Street and Montgomery Avenue on Spokane’s lower North Side, near the Camp Automotive Inc. car lots.

Ogden, Utah-based EK Bailey Construction Inc. is the contractor on the project, and North Salt Lake, Utah-based JZW Architects is designing it.

EK Bailey has worked on several Maverik locations nationwide, says Sorenson, as has JZW Architects, which designed at least three of the five Spokane-area Maverik locations.

Sorenson anticipates the station will employ between 15 and 20 employees, which she says is on par with other Maverik stores.

The site previously was the location of a cluster of office and warehouse buildings that held Brock’s Gunsmithing Inc., an old barber shop building, and Ron’s Tire & Brake, all of which were demolished between 2017 and 2018, according to permits filed with the city.

Maverik’s other Spokane-area gas stations are located on south Regal Street, on the South Hill; east Francis Avenue, on the North Side; east Montgomery Avenue, in Spokane Valley; and north Evergreen Road, also in Spokane Valley.
