Universal Athletic opens showroom, office in Spokane Valley

Sports team outfitter hires six former Kimmel employees

Universal Athletic Services, a Bozeman, Mont.-based team and league sporting goods supplier, has leased 2,700 square feet of space for a new showroom and sales office in the Spokane Business & Industrial Park, at 3808 N. Sullivan.

Greg Miller, president of Universal Athletic, says the outlet here also will be a pickup point for some team supplies.

The company focuses primarily on sales to high school and college teams and sports leagues. Universal Athletic also handles some corporate sales.

“We’re new to Spokane,” Miller says. “But we’ve been in the sporting goods business for 46 years now.”

Universal Athletic has a presence in 12 states.

“We also have some retail sales, but that’s not a Spokane thing,” he says.

Universal Athletic has six employees here, all of whom had worked for Kimmel Athletic Supply Co. Spokane-based Kimmel was acquired earlier this year by Dallas-based BSN Sports, which claims to be the largest distributor of team sports apparel and equipment in the U.S.

Following the acquisition, BSN closed Kimmel’s three retail stores in Washington state, including its Spokane store.

Dean Stuart, vice president of the Spokane Business & Industrial Park, a subsidiary of Spokane-based Crown West Realty LLC, brokered the lease.

Beverly J. Johnson Foundation, a Hayden Lake nonprofit, has bought as an investment a nearly 1-acre parcel zoned for industrial land uses at 6615 W. Boekel Road, in Rathdrum. Craig Hunter and Rob Kannapien, both of Coldwell Banker Commercial Schneidmiller Realty, handled the transaction.

Main, in Riverstone Village, in Coeur d’Alene.

Looking Glass Antiques LLC, a Coeur d’Alene antiques and thrift store, has leased 6,000 square feet of retail space at 848 N. Fourth, in Coeur d’Alene, and has moved there from smaller quarters at 1913 N. Fourth. Professional Realty Services also occupies the building’s second floor.
