Permit mapper expands reach to include Spokane

Customers can access up to 10 years of records

August 11, 2016

San Francisco-based BuildZoom has released a building permit map of Spokane as part of its larger Permit Mapping project, says a press release from the company.

The Permit Mapping project consists of every remodeling and construction license within the past 10 years, says Jack Cookson, lead data analyst. Customers are able to search addresses and pull up that location’s permit history.

BuildZoom has collected complete information on about 50 percent of jurisdictions nationwide, Cookson says.

In addition to the permit map, BuildZoom’s Spokane page, located at buildzoom.com/spokane-wa, includes information on contractors, analyzes permit activity in Spokane, lists the contractors with the most permits, and catalogues the rate of change—which contractors are on the rise, and which have declining business—in Spokane, he says.

“We often are helping our customers find these contractors. If you’re working on a bathroom remodel in Spokane, we can say, ‘Here are three contractors that in the past year have done three bathroom remodels in your neighborhood for about the same price you’re looking at,’” says Cookson.

Contractor data for Washington state and Spokane is collected from the Washington state Department of Labor & Industries, he says.

As of Aug. 5, information for Spokane Valley and unincorporated Spokane hadn’t been gathered, he says.

Established in 2011, BuildZoom started after founders David Peterson and Jiyan Wei were both working on construction projects and “were trying to find a good contractor and couldn’t find any place to find one,” says Cookson.

To generate revenue, the company takes 2.5 percent of the winning bid price from contractors who won construction contracts through BuildZoom, says Cookson.
