Spokane-based Northwest Neurological PLLC has launched Kingfisher TMS Services LLC, a company that offers transcranial magnetic simulation services at Northwest Neurological’ s office at 26 E. Fifth, says Dr. David Greeley, a neurologist with the practice.

Additionally, Northwest Neurological recently has purchased three new chairs developed by Malvern, Pa.-based Neuronetics Inc. to aid in administering TMS.

Greeley says TMS involves delivering a patient a high concentration of tiny, magnetic pulses to an area of the brain about the size of a golf ball for 20 minutes per day for six weeks. The treatment has been approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to treat depression. Greeley says the treatment may be effective for other mental disorders in the future.

Depending on the study, TMS has a 30 percent to 60 percent success rate for patients, claims Greeley.

Conversely, patients using oral antidepressants might have a 30 to 40 percent chance of the first pill they try working. 

Northwest Neurological has five employees and occupies an entire 5,000-square-foot building, says Greeley. The practice was established in 1999 and offers treatment for a variety of neurological conditions, such as Parkinson’s disease and Alzheimer’s disease.

Greeley first began offering TMS through a partnership with Colorado-based TMS Solutions in October 2017. That partnership ended in March, and Greeley opened Kingfisher last month.
