Spokane International Airport has submitted a permit application for its planned $8.8 million fuel facility upgrade and expansion project.
The project, which is expected to begin this summer and wrap up at the end of 2026, will include the addition of a new 500,000-gallon jet fuel tank, upgrades to the three existing 250,000-gallon fuel tanks, and other associated improvements.
“The facility’s three current 250,000-gallon fuel tanks were constructed 30 years ago in 1995,” says Todd Woodard, marketing and public affairs director for the airport.
Since then, he says, the size of aircraft used for passenger and cargo operations has increased and the number of departing passengers at the airport has more than doubled.
“While airlines are responsible for coordinating and purchasing their own fuel, the facility ensures airline and cargo partners have adequate fuel inventory to sustain their modern-day operations,” Woodard says.
Kansas City, Missouri-based Burns & McDonnell Engineering Co. Inc. designed the fuel facility project. A contractor has not been selected yet.
The fuel facility project is separate from the airport’s ongoing Terminal Remodeling & Expansion, or TREX, project.
The first phase of the TREX project is the Concourse C expansion, which consists of two segments: Concourse C West and Concourse C East. The entire first phase of the TREX project is valued at $150 million.
Construction of Concourse C East began last spring, following the completion of Concourse C West, and is expected to wrap up in the third quarter of 2026.
Once all work is completed, a total of 144,000 square feet of space will have been added to Concourse C.
In the future, Spokane International Airport plans to pursue the second phase of the TREX program, which involves upgrades to the facility's Central Hall to consolidate security screening checkpoints and baggage claim areas.
