A new Dick’s Sporting Goods Inc. retail store is planned in the Northpointe Plaza shopping center in a former Sports Authority site, at 9620 N. Newport Highway, a building permit application filed with the city of Spokane indicates.

As of earlier this week, the $3.4 million project was under plan review with the city.

The project applicant is listed as the Gilbert, Ariz., office of Oak Brook, Ill.-based RPAI HOLDCO Management LLC. The architect is listed as Herschman Architects, of Cleveland, and the listed engineer is McHenry & Associates Inc., also of Cleveland.

A contractor hasn’t been selected, the application indicates.

Representatives for the applicant declined to comment on the project.

According to the permit application, the store would occupy 45,500 square feet, 41,100 of which would be retail space, and the remaining space would be for storage and administrative offices.

The building permit application describes the work proposed as interior tenant improvements and selective exterior improvements.

Headquartered in Pittsburgh, Dick’s Sporting Goods was started in 1948 in Binghamton, New York, by Dick Stack, the company’s website indicates. The founder’s son, Ed Stack, is currently Dick’s Sporting Goods’ CEO and chairman. The retail chain now boasts more than 675 stores.

Products the chain carries include apparel, footwear, and accessories for multiple sports and activities such as baseball, basketball, boxing, camping, cycling, fishing, football, hockey, hunting, kayaking, snowboarding, soccer, swimming, tennis, volleyball, wrestling, and yoga.

Dick’s Sporting Goods entered the Spokane area market in 2012, when it opened a store at 14014 E. Indiana, in Spokane Valley.

Sports Authority, once the largest sporting goods retailer in the U.S., went out of business when it failed to find a buyer during bankruptcy proceedings in 2016.
